I don’t have a double oven range in my current kitchen but the kitchen of my dreams will have one. Until then, the Breville BOV900BSS Convection smart oven air is the ideal substitute. It is huge and a versatility pro.
If you are the designated “cook” for all large family gatherings then you know that there are never enough ovens to prepare a large turkey, a casserole or two, the cake and the pies.
Especially at Thanksgiving. But every day of the week works for me as well. It is particularly handy when preparing cassolettes so it is getting a full work out these days.
Breville® BOV900BSS Smart Oven Features
Breville appliances are everywhere in my kitchen so it made sense to upgrade from the Breville Smart Oven to the larger Oven Air countertop oven.
I make full use of the convection cooking capabilities of my range so having the ability to cook by convection in a toaster oven is a plus.
This model has two convection speeds – regular and super speed.
Oven size was at the top of my list of must-haves when looking for a replacement.
I hoped to be able to roast a small turkey or large roasting chicken in record time if needed.
Like crispy french fries? The Air Fry setting along with the mesh tray make the crispiest fries in town.
I’ve been dehydrating herbs and certain veggies in my microwave for a long time. Love to have fresh celery leaves and parsley on hand to crumble into soup broth.
The Smart Oven Air can fry french fries (and much more) plus dehydrate a variety of foods.
You can have several mesh trays dehydrating food at the same time.
Please ignore the paper towel lint on the glass window 🙂
I have not yet attempted to roast a 14-pound turkey but I have easily fit a standard 9 by 13-inch pan in the toaster oven.
You can also reverse the racks. Instead of hanging down, you can flip them over to fine-tune the distance between the racks and the heating elements. Certain cooking methods require that the rack is flipped one way or the other.
It also had no trouble handling the multiple cassolette dishes when I experimented with the different shapes and sizes.
Versatility is its middle name! Want to know what really sold me on the Breville BOV900BSS? The proof setting! I love to make cinnamon rolls and French bread but there is never a safe draft-free place to proof the dough. Now there is 🙂
In fact, there are a total of 13 built-in cooking functions visible on the LCD display:
- Toast -Perfect for my English raisin bread
- Bagel – Because they are thicker than toast 🙂
- Broil – To a golden brown. Keep an eye on it as those heating elements are very efficient
- Bake – Piece of cake!
- Roast – Juicy cuts of poultry and meat
- Warm – When you want to take the chill off something that just came out of the fridge
- Pizza – I love the 13-inch pizza pan that fits snuggly into the oven. There is a rounded area in the back wall of the oven so the pan fits perfectly.
- Proof – Cinnamon rolls proofing safely in a draft-free area! Perfect pre-set temperature.
- Airfry – Crispy, crispy frozen french fries!
- Reheat – Reheats leftovers without drying them out
- Cookies – Melt in your mouth chewy goodness
- Slow Cook – Don’t heat up the regular oven for a small Dutch Oven meal!
- Dehydrate – Celery, parsley, thyme, sage and bay leaves. Ready for the pantry shelf.
The oven light automatically turns on at the end of the cooking cycle or used during the cooking cycle. Just push the little light bulb button.
When the rack is set to either the toast or bagel level, it becomes an “auto-eject” rack. The edges of the door are magnetized at that level so as to pull the rack out as you open the door. How neat is that? No need to reach into the depths of the oven for your toast.
Advantages & Disadvantages
Any Breville toaster oven problems? None so far. Our previous oven lasted for years without any issues at all.
This oven is in constant use and I have not even ventured into all its capabilities. We use it for traditional toaster oven purposes – toast for breakfast and reheating leftovers for lunch or dinner, to baking biscuits and cooking pizza. And of course, to cook cassolettes!
Pros: The Smart Oven Air comes with many accessories to include
- Phased cooking – start with one setting, finish with another
- Two oven racks
- A 13-inch pizza pan
- One mesh tray for air-frying or dehydrating – you can use as many as four in the oven.
- A roasting pan with drain rack. Will have to try a 12-pound roaster.
The oven light turns on a couple of seconds before the set time has counted down to zero.
My previous oven stayed hot or warm until it eventually cooled off. The Smart Oven Air fan vents the oven cavity for a certain amount of time once the cooking is over. Never thought of it as a plus until now.
It has a much larger footprint than the Smart Oven®! And that is to be expected but… I never considered the depth of my kitchen counter versus the width of the oven. This oven is 21 inches wide so it does not fit as snuggly back into the corner of the counters.
The standard depth measurement of kitchen counters is 25 1/2 inches but I get to thank the person who thought it would be a designer touch to add a 6-inch backsplash made of the same countertop material. The backsplash is 1-inch deep so… I lose two inches in the corner!
When it comes to pros and cons, there are so many pros to this countertop oven that it is almost a shame to mention what is – in my opinion – the one sizeable disadvantage – The countertop footprint. It also needs extra space around it to vent properly.
In other words, what this appliance really needs is a kitchen nook of its own.
In my mind, there was no way it could remain small and take a 14 lb turkey or a 9 by 13-inch pan. I was wrong on one point – it does take a regular 9 x 13 pan. I will have to test the turkey claim.
- My rating? 9.5 out of 10.
- Price? Varies from store to store. I was lucky enough to have a store coupon.
I upgraded to this Smart Oven model just prior to Thanksgiving 2018. Close to five months later, I’ve become used to the size and adjusted how I prep the food but it is high time for a kitchen renovation.
